Removing an agent connection, uninstalling the CLI, and deleting saved data are different operations. Use this guide to choose the effect you intend.
Finish or close active sessions normally before changing their setup. Back up project and user data if you may need it later.
Remove a project’s connections
In each connected project’s root folder:
magistr remove . --dry-run
magistr remove .
The first command previews removal. The second reviews and applies it. Read the report: unchanged generated setup can be removed, while customized files and unrelated tool connections are preserved. Project settings and saved work remain.
To remove only managed Codex setup:
magistr codex-remove . --dry-run
magistr codex-remove .
Open a fresh agent session and confirm that the removed connection is no longer loaded. Preserved custom registrations may still need your review in the agent’s settings. Removing one project’s connection does not remove another’s.
Uninstall the executable
For the Cargo source installation, run in a terminal:
cargo uninstall magistr-cli
This removes the Cargo-installed executable. It does not remove the source checkout, your projects, agent accounts, or saved Magistr data.
If magistr --version still works, use command -v magistr to locate
another installation. Remove it using the method that installed it.
For the desktop, quit the app and use the operating system’s ordinary app removal process. A Windows installer has its own uninstaller. Removing the desktop app does not imply that user data was erased.
Understand what remains
| Data | After ordinary connection or executable removal |
|---|---|
| Your source and Git history | Retained. |
| Project settings and customized instructions | Retained where removal cannot safely identify unchanged generated content. |
| Workflow records and saved checks | Retained in the workflow store. |
| Magistr conversations and drafts | Retained in user-level storage. |
| Source-change journal and recovery copies | Retained with project data. |
| Agent-provider history and authentication | Managed separately by the agent. |
Reinstall and connect the project again to use retained records, provided the identity and storage locations still match.
If you intend to erase data
magistr reset is a destructive project reset, not an uninstall or
troubleshooting shortcut. Read magistr reset --help, back up first, and
review its confirmation before using it.
User-level conversation and workflow stores may contain records for several projects. Do not delete an entire shared directory to remove one project’s connection. Consult Storage and identify exactly what you intend to erase.
